Established in 1950, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) have become synonymous with excellence in technology and engineering education in India. The IITs offer undergraduate, integrated postgraduate and postgraduate programs in various engineering, science, technology and management disciplines.
Admission to these programs is through a highly selective national level entrance exam, called the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE). IITs are most renowned for highly selective student body and its faculty. Apart from providing outstanding education in engineering, sciences, business and other disciplines, IITs boast some of the best research facilities resources in India. The IITs are unique in the diversity - in terms of socio-economic background, culture, language and religion - of their student body, which gives IITians the ability to manage and, indeed, thrive on diversity in a fast globalizing economy.
Today, the IITs offer undergraduate, integrated undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in over 25 different engineering, technology and business/management disciplines. There are seven IITs, located in Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Guwahati, and Roorkee. All are autonomous universities with their own curricula.
