PiTech was launched in May 2005 during the IIT2005 Conference in Washington, DC. It is a labor of love by a group of dedicated volunteers who devoted time out of their own busy schedules to produce the magazine. Their efforts are paying and Pitech has received excellent reviews from conference attendees and many others worldwide. Issue 2 followed in March 2006. Issue 3 was released during the Global IIT Alumni Conference in Mumbai in December 2006 by the president of India - Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalaam. Each issue has a central theme – a specific technology cluster, scientific principle or paradigm, developmental goal, etc. – and a large part of the magazine is devoted to news, features and opinions related to that theme. Wherever possible, IIT involvement in that theme is explored and IIT faculty, students, or alumni are invited to write about it. In addition to the central theme, each issue has a secondary theme. There is also a section devoted to news and opinions from each IIT, a section on research by IITians, and coverage of technology developments in India and abroad. The theme of the Issue 1 was Nanotechnology. The theme of Issue 2 released in March 2006, was Biotechnology. Issue 3 released in December 2006 focuses on Rural Technologies.
PiTech Mission
The mission of PiTech is to showcase research carried out at the IITs or by IIT alumni at other institutions. While the IITs are recognized worldwide as premier undergraduate teaching institutions, they also are important national centres for postgraduate education and research. PiTech highlights the accomplishments of the IITs, faculty, students and alumni. It reports on IIT research, technology, educational initiatives and contributions to India and the worldwide community. It also serves as a forum for discussion on issues at the intersection of technology and policy, technology and business, and technology and development especially as they affect India. PiTech is distributed to a diverse audience, ranging from aspiring IITians, IIT students, faculty and alumni, to policymakers, business leaders, and academics globally. With such a wide audience base, the magazine strives to find the right balance in terms of editorial intent, breadth and depth of content, and presentation style. It is professionally managed in some aspects of content generation and all aspects of design, production and distribution, while largely relying on volunteers for content generation and editing.
